Birdwatching at Baikka Beel: A Sanctuary for Migratory Birds

Baikka Beel Wetland Sanctuary is approximately 25-30 km from Sreemangal, within the Hail Haor region. Declared a permanent sanctuary in 2003, it covers over 170 hectares and is a crucial habitat for both resident and migratory waterfowl.

The sanctuary is particularly spectacular during winter (November to February) when thousands of migratory birds arrive. Species include various ducks, egrets, herons, and the rare Bengal florican. The best viewing spots are from watchtowers built for visitors.

Sunrise and sunset offer the most dramatic views, with mist floating over the water and flocks of birds in flight. Bring binoculars, a camera with a good zoom lens, and wear muted colors to avoid disturbing the birds.

Remember: Maintain silence, stay at designated viewing points, and never disturb the birds or their nests. This is a protected area — help preserve this precious ecosystem.
