Discovering Lawachara: A Jungle Escape Near Sreemangal
Just a short drive from Resort Nirjon lies Lawachara National Park — a hidden rainforest where you can spot Hoolock gibbons, hike through lush trails, and experience the wild side of Sylhet.
Lawachara National Park is one of Bangladesh's most remarkable natural treasures, located just 8-12 km from Sreemangal town in the Moulvibazar district. This semi-evergreen rainforest spans approximately 1,250 hectares and is part of the larger West Bhanugach Reserved Forest.
Established as a national park in 1996 under the Wildlife Act, Lawachara is home to the western Hoolock gibbon — Bangladesh's only wild primate. These gibbons live in small groups high in the canopy, and hearing their morning calls is an unforgettable experience. Along with gibbons, you might spot Phayre's leaf monkeys, capped langurs, and over 167 plant species.
The park offers well-maintained hiking trails perfect for nature walks. Early morning visits are best for bird watching and photographing the forest in soft light. Remember to bring sturdy shoes, water, and avoid carrying plastic into the forest.
Tips: Hire a local guide for safety, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a camera with good low-light performance.
